I meet students "where they are". Of course this can mean I drive to their home, but I really mean that I see what level and interest YOU are at, then work on expanding your interest to new levels. For my youngest students I start with a method book as I think the structure and step by step progress are very helpful. For teens and adults book recommendations are based on each students needs. I let the students guide me with the kinds of music they will really enjoy playing, but I will use the music they like to teach theory, song writing, and other aspects of music. I generally split lessons into three sections, 1/3 with chords, 1/3 scales, 1/3 with songs, but every student is different, for example, If your goal is to strictly learn chords to sing folks songs over, I will emphasize more chord reading and learning time. If you want to play leads, I will spend more time emphasizing scales to help you learn how to improvise. Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson.
