I have been teaching music for many years. I enjoy watching my students progress in the learning process. I always ask what the student wants to learn such as style, a song, etc. I also accompany them playing the piano or guitar once they have learned the basic techniques, etc. This also helps them working with other musicians or singers. My teaching style varies. For beginning students I find it is very essential to make sure the student understands proper left hand and right hand technique before getting into the thick of theory. It's important that a student can play the instrument comfortably before they have to worry about playing in time, reading notation, etc. I've used Mel Bay and Hal Leonard books in the past, and I am also open to any literature the student may have. I love to see my students grow and develop as their passion for music increases. I facilitate this by giving examples of goals that they can reach and examples of different styles and genres that they can immerse themselves in. By doing this students see that playing and possibly mastering an instrument is not just about discipline and practice but about a high level of expression and communication.
