Most of my instruction experience has been on-the-job teaching of my professional associates and bandmates as a Musical Director and bandmate. I have occasionally taught lessons during brief stints off of the road, but playing on the road has been my primary job for most of my adult life. My love for education started very early by teaching neighborhood kids, and eventually I became a professor in the subjects of theory and piano at the Nola Saigh Sainz School of Music in Ciego de Avila, Cuba. As a teacher my goal is not to simply teach a student how to play or sing a certain song. My goal is to teach my students how to use the discipline of music to help them to develop their character. To that end I emphasize learning music fundamentals well and being able to put them into practice playing or singing in public at every opportunity. It is important to me that a student both enjoys and learns from their lessons. I strive to make lessons well-rounded. While piano instruction is certainly central to each lesson, I also spend time teaching music theory and ear training. I typically use Alfred's Basic Piano Library method books to achieve this well-rounded approach. I solidify my position with an in-depth knowledge of the material to be presented and with the expertise to demonstrate and cultivate certain aspects of vocal technique. I meet the student where they are, intuiting their desires, fears, and needs.
