For beginning students, who are starting from an early age, I typically combine playtime and learning. For example, for the youngest students, I use the analogy of the seven colors of the rainbow to learn the music notes. Throughout my years of teaching using this technique, I've received a lot of positive feedback from the students that as learning kept them interested and excited about learning the instrument. For beginning piano students, I typically begin with the Piano Adventures series lesson books, adding integrated theory, composition and musical history with instructional activities. Depending on the student, once they complete the initial book, I begin to incorporate basic improvisation strategies and duet playing to develop their knowledge of theory as well as their aural skills.
