My experience with teaching has spanned from my high school days when I trained in my hometown of Nashville, TN. I taught students in my community orchestra, as well as a basic music theory class there. After high school, I took on a couple of private students for my college professors, whom I intermittently taught throughout my bachelors degree. As a music education major I spent a lot of time learning pedagogy, assessment, and evaluation. I've written dozens of lesson plans including those for students with special needs. Unfortunately my time as a teacher has been rather limited which is something I'm working on changing. I had one student who I was able to work with during my last year of college. When i start a beginner student, i like to use either Essential Elements or Suzuki for violin and cello. For piano, i like to use the Faber method books. As the student progresses with either instrument, I try to encourage them to continue with scales and to move up in their playing abilities and music reading. I find a great sense of joy in my students developing a passion for music much like my own. It is important to me to include composition, theory, and history in my lessons so that my students can understand music as a whole, rather than just being a talented performer.
