I've been teaching in a number of different situations for about 4 years now. I first began teaching in 2010 when I worked at the Magik Children's Theater in San Antonio as an instructor for a School of Rock class there. In this class, I taught beginning students on guitar, bass, keys, and drums how to play popular rock songs. Lessons for young students (typically those twelve and under), an hour lesson consists of ten minutes of warm-up material (scales and rhythm concepts), fifteen minutes of content review (songs and concepts previously learned), fifteen minutes of introducing material or practice critique, and ten minutes of in-class practice. The last fifteen minutes of class is for theory building and notation comprehension (in vernacular, music-reading), and the last few minutes is for lesson review, where we discuss what we learned in the lesson and what the expectations are for the following week. My goal is for students to love playing their instrument so much after every lesson that they are motivated to keep working on concepts outside of their lesson time. Thus far, all of my private lesson students practice outside of their lessons, and I hope to keep it that way! I believe that all students are capable of learning music regardless of preconceived notions about talent level. I understand that people have busy schedules, but I expect them to make some time to practice outside of lessons even if it is only for 10 or 20 minutes per day. Read More
