For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. For fiddling, I gauge the students' strengths and develop some exercises that will enhance their sound and overall technique. Then, we choose tunes that are interesting to the student and work through them either one or a few at a time, depending on what is a comfortable work load and also a comfortable challenge. I like to begin each lesson with a warm up to get the mind and fingers working together. From there we will focus on building technique, musicality, and theory knowledge while focusing on cello repertoire. To end each lesson, we'll break out something fun whether that means learning a new pop song, jazz piece, or playing a cello duet. For all of my students, I encourage consistent practicing of their instrument in order for them to grow and build their musical skills. Students are given scales, modern and classical pieces to practice. I find the combinations of these three things let most students see how diverse strings can be. I've taught piano and violin for many years and enjoy the rewards and the challenges of working with students and having them learn the skills to both enjoy and succeed in music.
