After completing her student teaching at the Liberty Public School District, she pursued her field experience and prepared for her career as an educator at numerous schools ranging from grades 4 - 12 and college students. Currently, Karla plays 4th chair viola with the St. Joesph Symphony and in the past has also performed for KC Civic Orchsestra. She is also the Viola player with Crescendo Trio. My teaching experience dates back to my student teaching experience in 1979 from Truman State University. From Truman State University I went on to teach public school Orchestra in Helena, Montana, Kansas City, Missouri area, Marshall, Missouri, Kirksville, Missouri, and finally to Fulton, Missouri. I have a total teaching experience of 37 years in both the public school setting and in my private studio. For beginning students, I start with the "I Can Read Music" and Suzuki Book 1. I am not a certified Suzuki teacher, nor do I teach in sync with the Suzuki style, but I do use the Suzuki book repertoire as I like the progression of ideas presented in the series. For middle school and high school students, I often work on all-district and all-state audition repertoire, prepare the students for school orchestra playing exams, or help them with tricky spots in their school orchestra pieces. For beginning students, I incorporate Mimi Zweig's teaching philosophies as well as those from the Suzuki method. From there we build progressively according to the needs of the individual student. I generally follow the ASTA guidelines for recommended literature and progression. The pieces that students play in the beginning are important because they each teach an essential skill for string playing.
