My teaching experience is primarily in one on one or small group settings. I have taught several students as young as 10 years old. It is my experience that a student's approach to their instrument varies with their age. The more time one spends with an instrument, the more one expects to have a certain sound. I typically use the Applebaum String Builder method books, and supplement with solo pieces as needed. I encourage regular practice, as students who feel they are progressing and doing well tend to enjoy their instrument more. As they become more advanced, they are encouraged to start giving opinions on what they want to learn. Born in Los Angeles, Andy started playing piano at age five and by age thirteen, he was studying the viola as well. He played in his schools string orchestra, the Conejo Youth Symphony, and was awarded the opportunity to perform at the Music Teacher's Association convention in Sacramento. As a tactile learner myself, I tend to encourage each student to bring a pencil to their lessons, to mark their music in whatever way helps them, as well as colored pencils to highlight dynamics and articulation.
