In addition to maintaining a private studio since 2009, I have taught at the San Francisco Conservatory Pre-College, The Chamber Music Institute, Little Mission Studios, San Francisco's Kipp-Bay Academy, and Inspire Music. I am currently a Teaching Artist for the Midori Friends Foundation and Elizabeth Faidley Studios, and I was previously a Teaching Artist with Oakland Symphony's MUSE program. My teaching experience dates back to my middle college years, as I began teaching private lessons part time approximately 10 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 7 years. Encouraging regular practice consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. For beginning students, I typically start with my method based on a combination of the Suzuki method, a base of the European School, and my intuition and vision of each student. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I don't have a singular method because every student is different. At the beginning of my lessons with a new student we will begin getting to know each other. Then we try different things. Some students are naturals at imitating what they hear, so we play to those strengths. Other students are more comfortable with structure and math, so we take that route instead. I love to help each student reach their own individual creative potential.  I give them a good foundation in technique, form, ear traning, and artistic expression, but encourage them to find a piece of music or a musical style that they enjoy to pursue and make sure to save time in each lesson to work on that material.  In terms of developing technique and musical skills, I am very detail-oriented and have clear lesson plans for each class, which I outline in each student's individual lesson notebook. I am a classically trained pianist and violinist from Memphis, Tennessee. My first piano lessons were at the age of 6. I began my violin studies at age 10, and have been playing for 16 years. I have studied violin with Chun-Yu Chen, Joy Brown Wiener (concertmaster emeritus of the Memphis Symphony), and Domenic Salerni (first violin, Dali String Quartet). I'm well trained in the Suzuki repertoire and philosophies, however I teach a combination of traditional methods and also have the ability to exclude one or the other. For beginners and young children, I teach note reading simultaneously but separately from the applied side of playing. Holding the violin and bow, for example, are very challenging and require time to focus on them individually. Note reading is done on the side and later these aspects merge so that kids are eventually learning new pieces by reading the music directly. Read More
