I create my own lesson plans (and some materials) specific to each student. Some standard books I use are Alfred's Drum Method book 1, The New Breed, Portraits in Rhythm, The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary to name a few. The books are necessary for developing music literacy, however I remind students that the pages don't make sound!!! Developing a discerning ear is paramount in my approach. Therefore we do a lot of listening and I engage students in dialogue for them to develop a personalized mental image of what they are trying to play. Read More

My father even had a music studio in the house. I would watch my father’s band rehearse and listen to many of his music students’ lessons. I was always exposed to top musicians, as my family attended many concerts. I especially enjoyed meeting the musicians in the bands, since my Dad was their colleague. As a result, I always studied with esteemed music teachers. I attended and obtained both of my degrees from top rated, prestigious universities. Read More

I have taught several of my peers and young students alike in the art of trumpet playing! My main goal in a lesson is to build the fundamentals and branch out from that basic understanding of the instrument. In any form of music, especially classical, a musician must have a firm understanding of the basics in order to excel in their musical future. My teaching on the trumpet also include a simple bit of learning on the piano as it is a fantastic way to visualize exactly what music is trying to do at any given moment in a selection. Read More

For beginning students, I start with the Essential Elements book. If the student has already taken lessons or is in their school band/orchestra, I encourage moving onto the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced method books depending on ability. Once a student has proven that they are able to handle it, I will start on solo repertoire. Particularly for college-bound musicians who wish to major in music, the majority of their lessons will be based on preparing solo literature for All District or college auditions. Read More

I've been teaching trumpet since I was a freshman in High School. My mother is a band director for Selma Middle School and frequently asks me to tutor students or conduct a group session. After High School, many private teaching opportunities opened up for me, including Hope Middle School, Red Wood Middle School, Clinton Middle School, as well as brass tech for Topsail High School and Clinton High School. I currently am under contract with Archer's Lodge High School as a marching band tech leading high brass and drill instruction as well as a few private lessons. Read More
