I began my teaching career with seven years of teaching students with multiple handicaps and moved in 2001 to my current postion where I teach from pre-k through third grade. My love for teaching began as a peer tutor in college. I tutored students in piano, guitar, bass ear training, and music theory. I began to love teaching when I noticed the change and progress it creates within people. While in college, I taught at a musical theatre camp as a music teacher. I have studied at Oberlin Conservatory and Rutgers State University and studied with some of the best teachers. I studied jazz trumpet for my bachelor's and Masters degrees. I moved to NYC in 2009 and have performed with artists such as Roy Hargrove, Kim Burrell, Geri Allen and Wallace Toney. I taught at the community outreach program at Rutgers State University and have been a teacher with Musika for 10 years. I believe that my style is really flexible. I think that everybody has a different way to learn so my style will vary based on the student. I also believe that the role of the teacher should the one of facilitating the student process but ultimately is the student who should dictate the style and the pace of the lesson. I believe also that listening is a really important part of music learning so I have my student listening to a lot of different music and also I play with them all the time so that they can hear and feel what is it to play together. Practice is ideal for each student. I encourage my students in their practicing. Progress will be made most quickly by those students who maintain the recommended practicing time (1 hour per day). Parents are also encouraged to be involved in their students practice.
