My teaching style is guided by several simple principles: 1.  Its all about two things; the MUSIC and RELATIONSHIPS. 2. It has to be FUN, or why do it? 3. Nothing is more satisfying (and fun) than getting better at playing an instrument. 4. To get better (and have more fun) you have got to WORK at it. (Hello, practice room!) 5. In order to motivate and help the student progress, I get to know the student as well as possible, model good playing and practice habits ( I play during lessons a LOT, and draw up sample practice plans for students depending on their needs and interests), help them establish GOALS, and use ENTHUSIASM, PATIENCE, PERSISTENCE, and EXPERIENCE to guide them along their musical journey. For beginning students I focus on getting them used to the first 5 most common notes on their instrument through both beginner methods and technical exercises. I can use whatever method they already have or I can recommend a method for us to study. For my own beginner students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More
