For the beginning and intermediate trumpet, cornet, alto horn, baritone, euphonium and bass student, we will use Arban's Complete Conservatory Method. The speed of progress will depend on the students basic knowledge of musicality. For the beginning and intermediate trombone student, I have my own teaching plan as well as Blazhevich's School for Trombone in Clefs. Again, the speed of progress will depend on the students degree of musicality. I typically start without the instrument at first and focus on breathing, posture, and building muscle memory with slide positions. With intermediate to advanced students, I like to focus on the theory/science behind trombone playing. I believe that my style is really flexible. I think that everybody has a different way to learn so my style will vary based on the student. I also believe that the role of the teacher should the one of facilitating the student process but ultimately is the student who should dictate the style and the pace of the lesson. I believe also that listening is a really important part of music learning so I have my student listening to a lot of different music and also I play with them all the time so that they can hear and feel what is it to play together.
