Students of all ages will work out of a technique/method book. Younger students will use Walter Beeler's Method for Cornet/Trumpet, more advanced students will play from Arban's. I emphasize a "classical" approach, especially with younger students to solidify their skills, encouraging intersted students to begin including jazz improvisation into their studies as their skills advance. I love to watch my students become better versions of themselves through the medium of music. I never want my students to be satisfied with reaching a destination on their goal charts. I want my students to become so infatuated with the journey, that they will seek to continue to look for new experiences to explore. I create this environment by keeping lessons diverse and dynamic. I make each student compile a list of goals for themselves, 3 big goals, 5 goals the lead to each of the 3 big goals, 10 goals to lead to each of the 5 goals, and finally, daily goals that will help us accomplish the 10 goals. I have taught lessons since the beginning of college with all ages and learning types. Teaching has always been a passion of mine so I pursue it whenever I can. I taught lessons at both UAFS and DU during my time earning my degrees. I typically begin with fundamentals to get an understanding for what areas of a student's playing need to be addressed. I'll try to correct future problems that are usually caused from poor fundamentals. Following this, we'll take a look at Bordogni etudes to see the student's understanding of time and rhythm. Once I have a good idea of where the student is at, I'll guide the student through the different methods of addressing a problem head on. Read More
