My teaching philosophy revolved around the idea that music should be fun and engaging. While many teachers start their students off by learning how to read music, I like to begin with actually playing and familiarizing yourself with the instrument and later translating that information to written music notation. I started studying music at a very early age. When I was four years old, I started taking organ lessons, followed by piano when I was 7 years old. During elementary school, I started playing the clarinet. In middle school, I started playing the oboe. During high school, I learned the english horn and alto saxophone. I meet each and every student at their own level, wherever that may be, and help them grow. I start with the end in mind. Once your student has established clear, realistic goals with me, all the focus is on reaching those goals. It is also made clear that it is the student's responsibility to come into each lesson showing clear evidence that they've practiced the music. I'm stern about this. In 2009 I became a graduate assistant at Central Michigan University. I also taught at an elementary school while I was in graduate school. After college I moved to North Carolina and became a band director on the middle school and high school level.
