My ultimate goal in teaching music students is to develop players who are intrinsically motivated. This is a long-term process which I enjoy guiding. I'm very interested in the psychology of motivation for each individual student, realizing that what "works" with one student may not be effective with another. I enjoy developing a relationship with individual students which is based on more than our involvement in music. For students at the beginning and intermediate levels on all instruments I use the Rubank Method alongside appropriate solo literature for their ability level. It is a succinct, affordable resource that will not leave a student lacking. When I teach any advanced brass player I use Arbans conservatory method, Clarke Technical Studies, and the brass gym. Guitar: An exploration of a variety of genres with an emphasis on technique and precision. We will master scales, basic chords, and important chord structures. Lessons will include an introduction to sight-reading and music theory as well as playing by ear, soloing, and songwriting. Bass: Lessons will focus on technique and music theory. I began teaching in Mississippi in 2011 to college students at the University of Southern Mississippi. After moving to Cincinnati, I began teaching preschool music. I began developing a preschool curriculum at the University of Cincinnati's Preparatory Program that combined reading, dancing, singing and imagining. After teaching privately for a year, I began my position as Executive Director of the Cincinnati Outreach (COR) Music Project. As I've said above, my teaching is curtailed to the individual needs of my students. I stress development as a complete musician, and that often includes breaking away from technique to discuss other ideas like music theory, ear training, etc. Most importantly, I can explain difficult concepts in many ways.
