As a performer who was selected for All-State every year and performed as principal clarinet with the Jacksonville Youth Symphony Orchestra, I began teaching private lessons while I was still in high school. After high school, I attended Florida State University, where I performed as a soloist with the graduate Wind Orchestra at the Florida Music Educator's Conference in Tampa, performed with the Wind Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and was principal clainet with the Florida Intercollegiate Band for two consecutive years. For beginning students, I like to focus for the first few weeks on playing scales and songs without written music, and I continue to incorporate learning by at any level. When I begin using written music I use the Accent on Achievement or Essential Elements method (I am also comfortable with other standard elementary methods and would be happy to use whatever method a student's band director is using), which is a good place to start whether or not the student already reads music. Every student has different needs. I offer a relaxed style of teaching. Safe, comfortable evironment. Parents are always welcome to attend lessons for their students if need be. I Introduce solo and ensemble rep as quickly as possible also along with familiar tunes the student requests.older students and adults are canvasses as to where there musical interests lie.
