After getting my bachelor's degree in music education from University of Maryland, I taught general, band, and strings in Montgomery County in Maryland. For younger students who are just starting out, I start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements seeing as that is the book that most public schools use when teaching young, aspiring students an instrument. As the student becomes more proficient, I will begin slowly introducing material of various styles to allow the student to explore their interests. For adults, I try to find what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly so the student can learn what they want to learn, as well as for them to have a good time no matter what their ability level is. For my beginning piano students, I emphasize the twelve major and minor scales with proper fingering, first one octave and then two octaves. These exercises strengthens fingers and create more familiarity with the keyboard. I use the book, Level 1 The Older Beginner Piano Course by James Bastien and the companion book, Musicianship for the Older Beginner. I have seen results when these books are used in tandem. I am a devoted music teacher and passionate performer, who likes to inspire my students to love making music. I perform with orchestras and chamber groups all over the Pennsylvania/Ohio area including the West Virginia Symphony orchestra. Additionally, I have an active chamber group, Kassia Ensemble, a mixed instrumentation group dedicated to furthering women's leadership in the arts.
