My approach to learning an instruments is to have the students learn to play by ear first before they can start learning to read music. I find that most students are able to progress quickly because it frees them to focus on the playing the instruments rather than reading notes. Music has been my life for as far as I can remember, I took my first lesson when I was seven years old and I was hooked. Ive been a Music performer for the past 18 years on my main instrument which is piano and Ive been teaching for 11 years. Ive helped a number of students reach their music goals, like two brothers that both discovered the love for saxophone in a school band I used to manage and were accepted into a performance school, or a young girl I taught whos goal was to play her favorite video game song on the piano but continued learning cause she loved it. Once I started at Temple University as a duel classical/jazz major, I was able to participate in an extremely wide range of jazz, classical, fusion, funk, rock, and world music ensembles. I also started working as a freelance musician in Philadelphia and along the East Coast. Around this same time (early 1990s), I was able to start teaching private music lessons at a local music store. During my time teaching at this store, I was able to begin to develop my teaching style and quickly discover that I really loved teaching and helping my students progress and have fun playing music. It is important to instill efficient and productive practice values in a way that that is exciting and fun, and that will foster the desire to learn and progress.
