Additionally, I like students to work on solos with piano accompaniment, although I don't require it. I am also a big fan of using duets to build listening skills and fluidity (and most students think duets are fun!). Each student is an individual and learns in a different way. Although I usually use the same or similar materials, I teach them differently to each student. My goal as a teacher is to help my students advance their musical abilities and have fun making music, so the students' goals will guide the direction of the lessons. For beginning students, I generally start with the Accent on Achievment book series and spend the first few lessons assessing and addressing the important fundamentals of the students' particular instrument. After working out of the book for an apropriate amount of time, I introduce solo repertiore from both pop and classical genres.
