I play several instruments and love to play the saxophone. I played saxophone for a year at Oregon State University in the Jazz Combo 1988-89. I took a long 20 year break from music to be a mental health therapist. I have had more time in the past couple of years and have picked up several instruments to heal after recalling past trauma. When considering texts and books for students, I believe that Hal Leonard texts are a standard and acceptable form of teaching. For students who may have personalized needs, there are accompanying tools that can be of use, and I try to use those as necessary. Beginning with any student at any level, I first try to engage with them on a purely audio level. By interacting with their instrument from a simply aural perspective, I can get a sense of how they respond to sound; for example, how they attempt to find patterns on a keyboard, or how responsive they are to consonance against dissonance. I am passionate a motivated while also being able to teach all levels of saxophone and clarinet. I have both a Bachelor of Music from the University of Oregon and a Master of Music from the University of Wyoming in Saxophone Performance. I have played both saxophone and clarinet for over twenty years. I have taught privately and in group lessons at the novice, intermediate and collegiate levels. I am an active musician based in the Portland metropolitan area who is hired regularly to perform for: jazz and cover bands, weddings, corporate events, musicals, and studio sessions. I also lead and write music for my own band. I attended Mount Hood Community College and Portland State University where I graduated with a B.S. in biology and in jazz studies.
