Once these become ingrained in the student's mind, I will introduce various excerpts based on their skill level, eventually working our way into solo repertoire. I started teaching 1st graders about basic music concepts at the local elementary school when I was in 7th grade. Once I got to high school and I started to get serious about music, I began teaching private lessons to middle school and other high school students. By the time I was in college, I was capable of teaching lessons to students of any age or skill level. I now teach a wide variety of students between the ages of 6 and 73 and have taught many genres including: Jazz, classical, pop, hip hop, blues, rb, samba, soul, funk, rock, and avant-garde. At the very beginning level I would start with fundamentals from whatever book I feel would be best for the student depending on their age and knowledge. Beforehand I definitely will need to asses their knowledge so I can do so accordingly. I however will now focus on solely fundamentals and will try to include in songs that the student would like to learn as long as it is in the bounds of reality, the lessons I provide are only part of the equation and the real work is what is put in after the lesson. My first teaching was in summer music schools, then as an intermediate classroom teacher and music specialist (bands, choirs, musicals, folk dances, recorder, ukulele, classroom music and theory). I earned my Masters and began teaching university but have always taught privately as well. I work with parents to encourage the student to be self-motivated, so I make lessons fun.
