As a performer who was selected for All-State every year and performed as principal clarinet with the Jacksonville Youth Symphony Orchestra, I began teaching private lessons while I was still in high school. After high school, I attended Florida State University, where I performed as a soloist with the graduate Wind Orchestra at the Florida Music Educator's Conference in Tampa, performed with the Wind Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and was principal clainet with the Florida Intercollegiate Band for two consecutive years. Music has always been my greatest passion. I became a teacher so I could spread that passion to my students and watch them succeed at something that they love. I believe it is important for all students to learn at their own pace and that is why I prefer the individual attention I can provide as a private lesson teacher over a classroom teacher. I use generally use Faber and Faber for piano and the Yamaha method for guitar. However, each student learns differently therefore I like to meet and assess the needs before choosing a course to follow. For band students, I use the school's chosen method of instruction supplementing with theory, technique and performance pieces. For piano students, I get to know each student's taste in music and choose accordingly. I began teaching clarinet lessons as a college student in 1990, and got my first job as a band director in 1993. I have not taught lessons in a home studio setting (only at school), but would be able to teach students in my home if desired, or would travel to students' homes or teach online if preferred. I have taught piano, drums, and all band instruments since 1993. Some of my biggest strengths as a private lesson teacher are patience, differentiating instruction to fit the needs of each learner, and finding material that will be both fun and beneficial for students to practice.
