I am a very motivated and serious piano instructor who loves teaching any age. I graduated with a BS in music education magma cum laude. I spent many years in post-graduate school focusing on keyboard music of the Renaissance and Baroque Time Period (1500-1750). I believe that a strong foundation is essential for steady progress and confident performance. A comprehensive approach is my preference. Therefore, when I teach piano, I prefer Faber and Faber Piano Adventures paired with A Dozen a Day for added technique. Since many students in this school district are in band or orchestra, I usually use Essential Elements for Strings, Brass, and Woodwinds. I spend a reasonable amount of time preparing my students for our recitals and many of them join in the group songs, which have included "What a Wonderful World", "Happy", and currently "The Theme From Midnight Cowboy". Reading music is essential. To me musicians who don't know how to read music are like people who speak without undertsanding the meaning of the words they say. I also focus on ear training and understanding the instrument naturally, being that I feel its best for the player to have a mulititude of approaches to their understanding of their craft. My teaching style is diverse, I like to pull ideas from all kinds of sources so that I can relate things easier and hopefully make learning more fun. I also stress the importance of being disciplined and focusing on goals whether practicing or performing. My style of teaching depends on the student and his or her goals . I constantly assess my students' skill and ability levels and use curriculum accordingly. I am very intuitive with how my students are feeling about their own progress and constantly check in with them to see how they feel about their progress and accomplishments. I set goals for my students, ensure that they practice to reach them on a regular basis, and then celebrate their success with positive reinforcement.
