I then provide several opportunities for the student to practice this new idea or skill in a variety of ways. For beginning students, I usually start by creating a strong foundation in the student's mind of why they want to learn how to play an instrument and what goals, if any, they initially have for themselves. I then utilize this to help create individual based lesson plans that are driven by the inner workings of the student's mind. I incorporate music theory into every instrument at every skill level because I believe it to be something that is extremely important to understand and that not a lot of students are exposed to before they get to college. My musical background encompasses a wide and varied musical life. I begin my study of piano at the age of 15 after selling my drum set and purchasing a piano with the proceeds. My parents were probably quite happy. One year later I began to study formally. After high school I begin to compose songs that had very classical oriented piano accompaniments. It is a great joy to see students learn, grow, and have fun! I begin by asking the student of their goals, and eventually help them develop new goals as they explore and find their unique gifts. Students are provided with a unique, well-rounded program tailored for them, including the foundational resources and understanding needed to fly with other musicians.
