To begin, I will start with chords and scales to get a student used to understanding of notes and progressions. Next, I would go over theory and technique in order to blossom a stylistic way of playing for the student. Next, I would start with simple etudes and pieces for each student to learn and master. For beginning piano students, I started with the Piano Adventures Series unless they show a higher than usual natural ability. If I see that are above average, I will switch them to the Modern Course for Piano by John Thompson. Along with these method books, I introduce solo music from classical to modern music. If the student is learning the trumpet or another brass instrument, we begin with Standards of Excellence by Bruce Pearson. Read More

My main goal is to keep lessons relevant for every student, and to provide an individual plan for each student. I choose a teaching method that is geared toward the student's learning style and personality - and especially age. There's nothing worse than using a method for children with a teen or adult! Ever since I was a child I had wanted to be a teacher. When I got to Central Piedmont Community College I focused on music education because I knew I wanted to teach music theory in college. After transferring to Wingate University I began studying choral music education because I was fascinated byhow the voice works and blends with other voices in a choir situation. I have had the opportunity to study rock bass, jazz bass, classical guitar, piano, and even private voice lessons from private lessons all the way up through college level lessons and these lessons have given me such a drive and passion for not only music, but music education.
