I cater my teaching to each student and put my emphasis on the appreciation of music in general. Even if the child ends up not continuing as a pianist, my goal is that he/she will always be in contact with music, whether as a patron, composer, or playing another instrument. For beginning students who are younger I typically start with Faber and Faber's Piano Adventures. If a student is older I will put them in the accelerated method or the adult method. I will sometimes supplement with Alfred's Premier series or Music Tree. Once a student has progressed to a certian level, I will introduce other piano literature to supplement the method book learning. I do not believe in a 'monkey see monkey do' style where I simply show the student and have them repeat the concept or technique, but rather a discovery learning approach where I provide the needed support for the student to learn and apply the concepts. During my undergraduate career, I taught lessons to vocal and piano students in the Chicago area. I truly loved working with those students, and I am looking forward to getting back into teaching now that I have settled in Bowling Green.
