I've been teaching on and off for the last few years. I started teaching privately in my senior year of high school with a rather small number of students. I would help fellow students or neighbors with preparing for NYSSMA, auditions, and upcoming shows. I assisted in directing the annual summer musical at North Shore Day Camp as the head voice coach from 2011 - 2014. I am a friendly and passionate instructor and I enjoy sharing my knowledge and enjoyment of music with my students. I have a Bachelor in Music in Classical Voice Performance from McGill University, where I graduated with Distinction in 2013. I also have a Master in Music ('15) and a Post Graduate Degree in Music ('16) from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I have been teaching piano for a year so far and it has been one of the highlights of my musical life. I love to find innovative and fun ways to make music theory and technique easier to understand for young minds. My #1 goal as a teacher is help students grow a passion for music, and equip them with tools to use for a future of music-making and music-enjoying. Another point of importance for me as a teacher is emphasizing the many ways/paths to learn and appreciate music, and introducing different styles of music-making at a young age (reading sheet music, learning music by ear, improvisation, producing music). I focus on posture initially, then introduce concepts of music theory when appropriate. Things like reading music, time signatures, key signatures, and what various markings mean are important for any musician, regardless of what their ultimate goals are. I do expect my students to practice regularly if they want to progress. I ask my students to keep practice journals, so I always begin with reading their journals and asking questions or making observations about it. Read More
