Once the student has a better grasp of the fundamentals, I will then select solo repertoire according to their abilities. I maintain the pace of the students and I will make sure that they're learning at a comfortable rate. Usually I'll make sure that the goal for the lesson is obtainable and we can achieve. Most teachers use a Hal Leonard beginning book. Essential Elements (EE) is popular, as well as Accent on Achievement. I'll be using EE for beginners. I drill ear training, and will have the student memorize simple songs to beginning not only increasing their repertoire, but a fun way of practicing scales. I will go over all scales, (major, minor, blues etc.), chords and their different styles, styles of picking, hammer ons, pull offs, vibratos, and yes, improvisation and soloing.
