I love the many facets of music. My love of music, and my best practice, stems from a deep enjoyment of listening to music, as a consumer of sound. Developing my listening ear has been the most useful tool in all my years as a performer. I've played with academic ensembles in a choral setting, and done significant work in small ensemble classical guitar groupings. My most enjoyable long term academic ensemble, however, was the African Hand Percussion Ensemble, as while it had a very strict underlying structure for the cohesion of the group, it was deeply improvisational in nature, my favorite aspect of musical performance. The type of material we can cover is very broad including scales, arpeggios, chords, chord construction, music theory, music reading, songwriting, learning songs, technique, etc... However it's very important to me to not teach material the student is uninterested in. Music is a language and every genre has its own language aside from music as a whole. For Example: If a student wants to learn how to play bluegrass I will not waste time teaching them Jazz oriented chord voicings, bebop phrasing, and other jazz oriented things. Read More

As stated above, I believe that emotion plays an integral role in the mastery and performance of any instrument. Consequently, my teaching style revolves around the use and application of emotion in play. A simple example of this would be a simple discussion of the differences between major and minor chords and the relative emotion conveyed by each, as interpreted by the student.
