I've been teaching lessons for students and also giving advise for others for 35+ years. I've been told that I have a very gentle nature. I guess it's the way I was brought up. anyway.....I teach to a students strengths and weaknesses. For example; One may have a young sax student that has very good sound right out the gate but cannot understand the language on the page. I believe in fundamental/conceptual and competency-based teaching. These fundaments, or "basics" can be taught through any methodology. Because I have experience teaching with many different types of method books, I will generally teach out of the method books that are the top preference of the band program in which the student is enrolled. Beyond the curriculum preferred by the band program in which the student is enrolled, I will determine which solos and/or methods are appropriate for each individual student based on their level of performance, the needs of the student, and the interests of the student.
