I have been playing the flute for over 25 years and have been in teaching/a therapist for at least 18 years. I currently work in a charter school with students ranging in age from K-5th grade, many with multiple disabilities. I use generally use Faber and Faber for piano and the Yamaha method for guitar. However, each student learns differently therefore I like to meet and assess the needs before choosing a course to follow. For band students, I use the school's chosen method of instruction supplementing with theory, technique and performance pieces. For piano students, I get to know each student's taste in music and choose accordingly. Additionally, I like students to work on solos with piano accompaniment, although I don't require it. I am also a big fan of using duets to build listening skills and fluidity (and most students think duets are fun!). For piano lessons, I have experience with a variety of methods; each has its strengths and weaknesses. I have used and am open to a variety of band and piano methods. Essential Elements is ne of the best band instrument books, and I like the Fabre piano student book series. I Introduce solo and ensemble rep as quickly as possible also along with familiar tunes the student requests.older students and adults are canvasses as to where there musical interests lie.
