With beginner saxophone, flute and clarinet students, I like to use 'Standard of Excellence' books (and typically 'Faber Piano Adventures' with beginner piano). I find that these books address the fundamentals, that are crucial to learn while young, in a fun way. Specific interests and styles can be explored too, while at the same time getting a well-rounded musical background. It has a CD, with the band in the background , so it makes it fun for a practice session at home. I also learned "Brain Gym" from one of my flute teachers. I always like to incorporate that especially if the student has some confusion or is stuck on an area like a certain rhythmic phrase, or anything hard to unravel, as well as reading music. In addition, I like to use yellow clear gels over the music should the student have a little trouble with eye tracking or staying focused. Read More

When I teach, I always make sure that I present new concepts and ideas in a digestible way. I also make sure my student and I are always on the same page with their goals and their playing. If my students don't understand something or feel like they're in over their head, I don't rush them to figure it out. Backtracking is always seen as a positive thing.
