I have over twenty years experience in music starting in 6th grade in beginning band; graduating from Western Michigan University in 2008 with a BA in music; playing in concert bands, jazz bands, musical pits; playing in regional bands of blues, jam bands, reggae and more. I love the opportunity to work one on one because every student's needs are so different. I offer a relaxed atmosphere while encouraging excellence in areas of music such as: Performance, tone, rhythm, articulation, dynamics, phrasing, breathing, ear training, music theory/composition, and music history. I find that students who practice during the week have the most successfully lessons and enjoy learning new pieces. My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons and running sectionals at the conservatory in my hometown. I have been consistently teaching students since either in my home studio, or at different private and public institutions. I have held different faculty positions in colleges in the past 6 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I choose the course of study based on the individual student. Beginners usually start in "Flute 101" or the Blocki Method - Book 1. Really young students start on a small, Nuvo flute, to accommodate size, then graduate to a traditional flute. I have a number of games and projects for young beginners.
