For beginning students (adult and children) I like to be sure that their knowledge about fundamentals is solid. I believe ear training is paramount. Not everyone can sing, but secure pitch discrimination can help all musicians (even percussionists). I encourage all students to participate in ensembles (band, choral also). I teach each student based on their needs and goals. Fundamentals are key to playing well. I always want learning to be fun but effective. I teach the student how to practice to reach goals and help the student set goals. I teach in terms of musicality followed by technicality. For beginning students, I use Hal Leanord's Essential Elements. They are very clear and helpful when learning the fingerings and they give students an opportunity in the early stages of their learning to play well known classical pieces at their level. Beginning students will also learn major scales. For intermediate and advanced students I use studies from Marcel Moyse, Taffanel and Gaubert, Trevor Wye, Jeanine Baxtresser, Andersen, Boehm, and so on. Read More
