For beginning students (adult and children) I like to be sure that their knowledge about fundamentals is solid. I believe ear training is paramount. Not everyone can sing, but secure pitch discrimination can help all musicians (even percussionists). I encourage all students to participate in ensembles (band, choral also). I usually recommend piano as a starting instrument for children at least 5 years of age. Most often, I use the Alfred Piano Library Series of coordinating lesson books. I am most comfortable teaching beginner to intermediate level piano students. My main teaching instrument is Flute, and I can successfully teach ages 9 and up depending on the size of the student (sometimes younger if a curved head joint is used).
