More than anything else, teaching music is what I love to do! It is a blessing to be apart of someone's musical development. In 1992, I graduated from Spring Arbor University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Instrumental Performance (Flute/Piano). Then in 1996, I graduated with a Master of Music degree from University of Massachusetts-Lowell with also in Instrumental Performance. I've taught private flute and piano lessons at: Andrews University, Lake Michigan College, Crescendo Academy of Music, The Citadel, Nashua Community Music School, and currently, my home studio in Plainwell.
I began teaching piano lessons when I was just a young teenager to neighborhood children, and then I began teaching flute students while in college. I have over 30+ years of professional private teaching lessons for students of all ages and abilities (beginner, intermediate, college, and graduate level). I love to help students with: Solo & Ensemble, chair placement tests/challenges, recitals, college auditions, concerto competitions, and develop a life long love of music. Whether you're behind or ahead of the class, I can be your guide to the next level of musicianship.
I usually recommend piano as a starting instrument for children at least 5 years of age. Most often, I use the Alfred Piano Library Series of coordinating lesson books. I am most comfortable teaching beginner to intermediate level piano students. My main teaching instrument is Flute, and I can successfully teach ages 9 and up depending on the size of the student (sometimes younger if a curved head joint is used). I enjoy using various method books to develop fundamental skills and then pair these with appropriate level solo works.
I love the opportunity to work one on one because every student's needs are so different. I offer a relaxed atmosphere while encouraging excellence in areas of music such as: Performance, tone, rhythm, articulation, dynamics, phrasing, breathing, ear training, music theory/composition, and music history. I find that students who practice during the week have the most successfully lessons and enjoy learning new pieces. Acknowledging a student's accomplishments sets the stage for better learning, and makes lessons more fun.
