After a sufficient "warm up" period is achieved, ensemble is next. At the more basic level I try to focus on duets. If group work is indicated trio, quartet (or more) is possible. Doubling parts may be needed (depending on task). I like to use a battery operated keyboard as drum machine (metronome) for teaching too. For students looking to learn other genres (like jazz, blues, generic latin/bossa, etc.) the "drum machine" gives added accompaniment. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons and running sectionals at the conservatory in my hometown. I have been consistently teaching students since either in my home studio, or at different private and public institutions. I have held different faculty positions in colleges in the past 6 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. More than anything else, teaching music is what I love to do! It is a blessing to be apart of someone's musical development. In 1992, I graduated from Spring Arbor University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Instrumental Performance (Flute/Piano). Then in 1996, I graduated with a Master of Music degree from University of Massachusetts-Lowell with also in Instrumental Performance. I've taught private flute and piano lessons at: Andrews University, Lake Michigan College, Crescendo Academy of Music, The Citadel, Nashua Community Music School, and currently, my home studio in Plainwell. For beginning students, I typically start with a Sound Before Symbol Method. That is, we learn to get to know the instrument before adding sheet music and theory. Every student's learning track is individualized- So if you want to learn pop music, I will arrange that for the flute! If classical is what you are interested in, I will bring in the Bach Partitas. Music theory and instrumental music can be taught using any genre, so let's make it what you want to play! Read More

I do tailor my music lessons for the individual student. There really is no making a general statement for a specific person. There are, however, some very fundamental aspects of learning music for all people which will definitely include practicing and mastering scales of all type, performing with others, and using the ears to truly listen to intervals and the emotions that are invoked by performing certain keys in specific styles.
