For beginning students no matter their ability level, I always introduce rhythms at the first couple lessons. Rhythm is one of the most important elements in music playing. For children 7-11, I suggest a fundamentals book like Standard of Excellence or Accent on Achievement. Later, I will introduce an exercise book called the Rubank's Method, which helps with articulation and technical skill. I also will ask the student to pick a fun songbook which they will be motivated to practice. For adults, we can develop a lesson plan together that develops your skills in the direction and repertoire that you enjoy. Read More

For example, I learned to play the oboe from the oboe professor. We had to make our own reeds and use them to play our final exam. Through this rigorous training, I learned to play all major scales and high school level music on the flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, French Horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, violin, viola, cello, double bass, and percussion.
