Hello! I am a Colombian-American composer and flutist from the San Francisco Bay Area with a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from San Jose State University. I have been working as a freelance musician for about 5 years. As a performer, I play just about anything and enjoy challenging myself with new repertoire, I particularly like playing Romantic or Modern music! I have taught in elementary day care in the early 1990's and taught in public schools elementary general music and chorus, beginning instrumental music at the elementary level, as well as middle school orchestra in the San Lorenzo Unified School District. I start lessons by warming up and doing exercises. For children, I do this in a listen and response setting. Then I will work through school songs or performance pieces, focusing on rhythms first, notes second and musicallity third. These 3 aspects lead to musicial mastery. I finish each lesson with an easy cool down. With in each lesson, I focus on musical styles that the students are interested in and work towards goals that the student set for themelves. Read More

I first picked up a Yamaha flute at my public school in the 5th grade and it changed my life. I traversed conflict-countries carrying only my flute, I was welcomed to cities and performed alongside renowned musicians in places like Havana, Seattle, Ramallah and Beijing. While I think it is necessary to stay on topic and have boundaries, beyond that, my teaching style is often unique to the student. Some students move at a quick paces and move through repertoire quickly, while others need more time to process and work.
