I began giving music lessons at 21 while I was a student at Texas State University as an education major. My drum instructor invited me to return to the studio as an instructor. I have taught students as young as age 3, as well as adults, and everyone in between! As a special educator, I have also taught students with various abilities, including those with autism. My teaching style is geared mainly towards going over fundamentals while finding the students interest in music. I encourage my students to listen to as much music as possible, to explore and find what they really enjoy. Depending on the age and personality, I cater each lesson to the individual. If they are younger students, I'll use Mel Bay or Hal Leonard books, but sometimes I will make a custom book that builds with their development and learning style. I believe reading sheet music is important, but understand that being able to play along with other musicians using ear training and improv skills, as well as reading chord charts, is just as necessary.
