I also gave guitar lessons to adults of different ages, ranging from 20s to 80s. This includes a position as a Recreation Instructor for the City of Los Angeles. As soon as I meet with a student or a group of students, I make sure they are welcomed by an energetic teacher before getting started on their lesson. I try to keep the student(s) engaged by showing them different ways and approaches to music from books and my own personal approaches to help them grow knowing their teacher is well experienced. Since their is a lot for a percussionist than just playing with sticks on a drum, there is no doubt that the endless possibilities in teaching students the various instruments will help keep them engaged as well being more excited about music. My teaching experience dates back to high school when I began teaching privately. One of my main focuses is the idea of making music. Not just playing drums and making noise, but making beautiful music. Drums is one of the most versatile instruments and I think its very important to explore and learn about its history in terms of all genres. There is so much to learn from exploring new genres we may not typically be attracted to, and I emphasize that to my students as I truly believe being a well-rounded musician is one of the most important skills we can have. I am extremely motivated to see my students enjoy their musical journey and have then develop their own passion for music. This usually requires setting goals that my students can reach with adequate practice, and constantly encouraging them throughout lessons. I believe that when students are given the right encouragement and acknowledgement they are more likely to succeed and have even more drive to learn. Too often I have encountered teachers that are extremely harsh in their teaching, but I do not think this really brews learning at a young age. Read More
