I have a set methodology that is flexible enough to cater to each individual student. We learn exercises for basic technique, followed by scales and arpeggios, then we work from a method book to address technique issues specific to clarinet. After that, we work on music such as etudes, solos, and ensemble parts for band or orchestra. Beginning piano students have used The Music Tree series. The format provides excellent reading skills and develops tonal memory and theory. Clarinet for Beginners by Avrahm Galper is the method book that has given students a foundation for whatever level they aspire to achieve. Students are encouraged to tell me what they would like to play. Overcoming performance anxiety is an important skill. My methods are not unusual, although I am a bit. Based on the the students experience and ability, or lack thereof, I'll make suggestions about what music to get. Often they already have music that will work, to which I will add developemental studies of various sorts. I also enjoy seeing their love of music develop.  I take each student where they are: beginner or advanced, and put goals in place for them.  Such goals can be things like learning music for solo and ensemble band / orchestra competitions, performing in their Church, or putting together a jazz band or classical ensemble for concerts.
