My guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, and drum students will start in the Hal Leonard's books as well if they are unsure of a specific genre or style they wish to play. If they already know what genre they'd like to specialize in, they will be given a curated coursework to help them build the skills they need to master whatever they wish to Jam out on! I believe that it is essential for students to learn the music grammar and the learn the basic fundamentals, which are used by every professional, no matter what style of music they play. It allows the students to be in love with music and later play whatever they want. I tailor every lesson to the student's wants and needs. In college, I began teaching privately, first only children, then college students, then adults, until I had a very diverse studio. Throughout the process, I also integrate tidbits of music theory and history to give the student a more well-rounded experience.  As for guitar and piano, I normally take a more custom approach to teaching that tends to not revolve around any specific method book. However, I typically teach beginning pianists and guitarists how to read through and play simple pieces of music so that they understand the fundamentals before moving on to a mix of songs or pieces that I select and songs or pieces that the student wishes to play so as to keep things fresh and exciting.  Read More
