For beginner students I usually start with teaching the fundamentals of how to hold the cello and bow and how to make a sound, using Pizzicato and bow movement. I then introduce the Suzuki volume 1-4 books and make sure that the student learns a piece that will help him or her improve the most but at the same time will ensure an enjoyable and successful learning experience. For intermediate and advanced students I usually get familiarized with the student's skill level during the first lesson and build an individual curriculum for each student that will involve pieces the student loves and wants to play, pieces that will challenge the student, and pieces that will help the student reach his or her goals as a cellist and musician Read More

My cello instructors have included Anthony Kitai, Brinton Smith, Lachezar Kostov, Michael Mermagen, Hans Jensen, Vagram Saradjian, and Misha Quint. Read More

For beginners, I always reincorporate very crucial skills to possess with constant repetition (i.e.: intonation, posture, bow technique, finger positioning). On top of this, I build on rhythm. Many times, parts of my lessons include simply clapping, so that students get a grasp for rhythm and constantly improve upon it. In terms of classical training, for me, knowing the "feeling" of the piece is key. By building upon this feeling, I introduce different styles and different techniques that the student can learn. The most important over-arching philosophy in ALL of my teaching, is INDIVIDUAL CURRICULUM. Every student is a unique human being, bringing unique perspective, experiences, talents, and flaws. I adjust all curriculum based on the needs of their students, in order to play up their strengths and address their flaws. My curriculum is also unique in that it values student input much higher than many people who teach strictly from the classical method. Read More

My main foundations for my teaching are rooted in goal setting, collaboration, and engaging music learning. At the beginning of every semester, I like to evaluate the goals from the previous semester, talk about what progress has been made, and what the future goals are. I personally feel that many times students quit because they do not enjoy practicing at home week after week, so for me, collaboration either with students from school, other students in the studio, or in local music schools or orchestras is a must.
