My first professional experience playing live was playing with Eric Clapton's drummer Jamie Oldecker at age 15 in a small club in Tulsa Oklahoma .James started playing guitar at age 12 after hearing Jimi Hendrix Electric Lady Land and never wanted to do anything else. James soon was playing Larry Carlton and The Crusaders note for note he studied jazz, R &B, funk fusion, metal ,pop, rock guitar and classical composition. For beginning students I tend to start with them learning the basic elements of the instruments and go over exercises that help familiarize them with the instrument. I then will start the student in the Hal Leonard's Essential ELements of books. After they have gained a grasp of the fundamentals I will start to focus more on the type of music they will learn. Some enjoy music theory, others prefer to just learn a more basic approach. Since I learned formally (in school/lessons) and informally (by ear, self-taught and playing onstage), I can give students whichever method suits their goals, with as much or as little theory as they are comfortable with.
