Regardless of their ages, I always attempt to establish what a student's interests in music are as well as their background and present faculties if applicable. From there, I attempt to develop an understanding of musical fundamentals (pitch, rhythm, timbre, dynamics) as they apply to their interests. It is crucial in my opinion to connect these essential elements of music to the context of a student's musical world. I have several books that I use regularly for examples and also, I write individual exercises for more specific issues with a student's technique and approach. Read More
Instruments: Bass Guitar
For beginners, I always start with technique. The bass guitar is a very physically demanding instrument and without the proper technique, students can injure themselves and prevent musical expression. After fundamental hand technique is in place, I use a hybrid curriculum that my teacher walked me through mixed with my own theories that have worked for me and from the Musicians Institute basic theory book. I am Grammy Nominated bassist who makes a living playing bass and teaching. I love watching my students improve their playing. In 2018 I received my Masters of Music Performance on Upright Bass from California State University of Fullerton. I've had the privilege to travel all over the world playing music and count this as one of my most treasured life experiences. I love to impart the knowledge that I have gained in my over 24 years of playing to my students and love to see them grow musically. Read More

I like to take each of my students on a case-by-case basis. I learn a little about them, what their goals in taking lessons are, and what kinds of music the like to play. When I reach for a method book, it is usually Mel Bay or Berklee Music Press for electric bass and guitar, or The Simandl Method for upright bass. I like to gauge what level the student is at and go from there, making sure that they have a strong foundation of fundamentals regardless of what the student's ultimate goal is. Read More

My general approach to teaching is to mold my lesson plan around the students needs and wants, and it's extremely important that our lessons are fun for the student! This is especially true for children; if playing an instrument becomes "work"/"homework" they will probably lose interest pretty quickly. It's important to try to avoid that mindset, and keep it fun so that the student WANTS to pick up their instrument and play everyday. Read More
