I like to teach bass slow and thoroughly. I find that building a foundation of understanding and competence before moving on the to next subject helps progress later. I strive to keep the lessons and bass fun by not placing a heavy workload and stenous practice regiments in the beginning. My teaching philosophy is that students blossom at their own pace. Some concepts might be more difficult for some to grasp than others. Students may excel in some areas and struggle in others. Most beginner students will start with basic technique: How to hold a pick, where to place your fingers, etc. After that I like to move on to chords as quickly as possible. This may require some extended lessons on finger strength and technique. If I am teaching bass, the next step is feel and groove. My method for teaching is individualization. All my lessons are individualized for each student's ability level and musical interests. If need be, I use certain books to supplement my lessons and for personal at home practice. Normally I only recommend books to students that want to further their understanding and ability in sight-reading, drawing from my own experiences learning from various books and online sources.
