I am a focused instructor and pursue progress. I come from a background of a love for music that turned into a desire to learn and perform. I owe everything I have become to my instructors, and I try to implement some of their technique into my teaching every chance I get. I have just recently graduated from a three-year master's program in voice performance. Since I've started that program, I have had the opportunity to travel Europe with a vocal ensemble, perform three times at the Grove Park Inn, act as diction coach for a professional opera chorus, and perform Mozart's Requiem. My teaching practices include "say it, sing it, move it, play it" - in simple terms. This technique of hearing and feeling the music before we play or sing will help students learn to better visualize or audiate the music before performance. I often have my students sight-read to stretch their rhythm reading skills, and I give rhythm exercises for practice and warm-ups. I consider the greatest and most rewarding aspect of teaching to be seeing and hearing a student gain the ability to play an instrument and thereby to become a musician. And I believe the only way to really accomplish this is to meet a student where they're at, become aware of their musical interests and goals, and to be a guiding voice that can help them work towards those goals in a more efficient way than they could on there own. My teaching style will vary with the learning style of the student. If the student is a kinesthetic learner, we may get up from the keyboard and express the rhythm through motion. The important thing to keep in mind in any student's journey is that some days it is going to come easily and other times it will seem like your student is frustrated as he or she strives to master a new skill.
