I follow the Suzuki method for beginner students, with some additional instruction to learn to read sheet music for those with previous music experience or older students who are ready to begin reading music. After the student has completed the first several books of the Suzuki method, I include selections from Solos for Young Violinists and other solo pieces as appropriate to reinforce certain skills. I like to use Essential Elements for beginners, especially children. It's also helpful to use if the children are in an orchestra. I also like to work with the Suzuki method for those who are interested in doing it. It's important that I help beginners in how to get the best resonance and basic techniques to build confidence for performance or specific goal they have in mind. I use the Suzuki Method throughout my teaching process. I think it is a great bases for teaching the techniques necessary to master the violin/viola. I also use various scale books (according to level) to teach note reading, sight reading, and basic music theory. Each student in my studio is required to work on a technique (scales, etc.) and one to two solo pieces. Along with this, majority of my students perform with orchestras in schools or the community. When first taking private viola lessons I studied Wohfahrt Etudes. Playing 1-2 level appropriate pieces is a great amount. Repertoire from the Suzuki books are fundamental stepping stones into becoming a better musician. I always enjoyed when I got to play a piece that I chose out myself, so I want to allow my students to find a piece of music on their own that they would love to play. Read More

I am somewhat flexible on books and methods, but unless my students have already invested time and money in a particular published method, I start them on the Bastien series, which is not too expensive and is well designed and effective. As they progress to intermediate, they will be expected to buy some classical music, collections, and technique books.
