When starting with a young beginner student, I typically start with the beginning Suzuki Method books or Essential Elements books. I will also work on school repertoire if applicable. Once they have advanced past the level of the Suzuki books, I will begin to introduce solo works appropriate for their level and desire. When teaching adults of varying abilities, my methods are much more tailored to their wants in terms of style of music, difficulty of the pieces and the speed at which they would like to learn. When i start a beginner student, i like to use either Essential Elements or Suzuki for violin and cello. For piano, i like to use the Faber method books. As the student progresses with either instrument, I try to encourage them to continue with scales and to move up in their playing abilities and music reading. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for violin students and piano adventures for piano students. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. What’s important is to strike a balance of activities that works for the student, engaging their desire to learn while giving them the structure necessary for success.
